Many people at Karuna have a sensitivity to perfumes and scented products and some are allergic to the chemicals in these products, which can set off a severe reaction. As Director I would like to make the space welcoming to everyone. I invite you to refrain from using these unnaturally scented products while practicing at Karuna. |

300-HOUR TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM Begins May 17-20, 2007 Dear Yoga Friends:I am very happy to announce the upcoming 300-hour advanced level training. This advanced 300-hour training continues from the 200-hour training to complete the 500-hour Yoga Alliance certification. This advanced study will mature your understanding and refine your teaching skills, allowing you to safely address the needs of students of varying age, body type, and skill level. It is recommended for teachers and advanced students who wish to learn more advanced asanas and techniques, refine the art of sequencing and linking, learn pranayama and more advanced pranayamas so you can safely teach it, and take your understanding of yogic philosophy and teaching to a deeper level. Many teachers find yoga therapeutics to be a challenging area - this training will deeply focus on treatment strategies and therapeutic applications for a variety of needs and conditions.
Format You must complete all 6 modules in order to graduate, no exceptions! The 300-hour advanced training will be offered in the form of modules, involving pre-reading assignments and other prep work - all of which will be clearly spelled out in advance of each module. Each month you will be in regular contact with me via e-mail and have the opportunity to have a half-an-hour phone consultation. When you e-mail me, please be sure to put "300 hr" in the subject line of your e-mail. Also, my e-mail does not allow for attachments, so please put any additional information in the body of the e-mail - THANK YOU!! There will be an additional 15 hours of homework which will include quizzes. Muscles and bones with Melinda Buckwalter In these two workshops we will review the names and functions of the bones and muscles. To deepen our knowledge, we will work experientially with them in yoga asana in order to ground our knowledge in practice. We will analyze the yoga asanas in terms of the joint actions and which muscle groups work and stretch. The anatomy of yoga actions that take place will be explored. In addition to yoga asana, we will examine embodiment practices such as visualization, breath work, and developmental movement. Correlations will be made between Western anatomy and Eastern energetic anatomy models. Intensive Weekend with Genny Kapuler Class 1 (Saturday morning): Diaphragm, lungs, rib cage, breathing, pranayama Class 2 (Saturday afternoon): Anatomy of the foot, ankle, and lower leg, standing poses Class 3 (Sunday morning): Anatomy of the hand and shoulder girdle connection, shoulder stands and shoulder stand family Anatomy with Matthew Sanford The Subtle Anatomy of the Postures In this weekend workshop Matthew Sanford shares his unique experience as a paraplegic yoga practitioner and teaches in the Iyengar method. Because of his paralysis Matthew has been forced to explore the subtle more energetic connections that exist between mind, body, and spirit, ones that are made more apparent by Iyengar yoga's heightened emphasis on alignment and precision. Students will be challenged to explore beyond the physical performance of asanas and delve into their underlying energetic experience. The weekend will include an introductory discussion of Matthew's story and three subsequent asana classes. Matthew is a nationally recognized yoga teacher, an accomplished public speaker, and a paraplegic for the last twenty-eight years. He is the author of the critically acclaimed WAKING: A MEMOIR OF TRAUMA AND TRANSCENDENCE (Rodale: 2006). Matthew uses his unique experience to be a leading voice for the integration of a mind/body/spirit approach into our medical and rehabilitation practices. He is also a pioneer in adapting yoga for people living with disabilities and won a Karma Yoga Award from the Yoga Journal for this work in 2003. He is the founder of Mind Body Solutions, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to the practical notion that minds and bodies work better together. I will decide which one you will teach. $500 Module IV: Therapeutics Therapeutics with Eileen Muir November 15-18, 2007 Thursday 10:30-7:30, Friday-Sunday 8-5pm Description: Asanas and sequences are recommended to students according to the ailment, challenge, or pathology that he or she is experiencing. These sequences have to be chosen with the utmost care and understanding of the effects and benefits, otherwise the treatment can actually harm or adversely effect his or her health. In this intensive workshop we will look at and learn sequences on knees, neck, shoulders, feet, hips, blood pressure, back pain, headaches, asthma, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and scoliosis. $500 Module V: Pranayama and Meditation Pranayama with Eileen Muir February 7-10, 2008 Thursday 10:30-7:30, Friday-Sunday 8-5pm Description: It is not often that pranayama is treated as an independent subject. However, most of the ancient texts in Yoga, beginning with the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, treat it as an essential part of the yogic discipline. In this workshop, we will treat this as a separate discipline honoring its true depth and significance for those on their yogic path. We will learn how to teach and structure various pranayamas into a class format. "Prana means the breath, air, and life itself. But in yoga, prana is the very essence of the energizing principle of the animate and inanimate world. It pervades the whole universe." - BKS Iyengar. We will learn to sit in meditation and this will be a strong component of the workshop. Mark Hart will lead the meditation component. $500 Module VI: Asana, Teaching, Assisting, & Adjusting Asana with Eileen Muir May 8-11, 2008 Thursday 10:30-7:30, Friday-Sunday 8-5pm Description: We will study the advanced curriculum and learn how to teach each of the poses in the syllabus. You will learn how to teach for various different needs and body types so you know when and when not to use props, and when to use gentle, firm, subtle or complex assists and adjustments. You will be given ample feedback and critiques on your teaching and also further develop swadyaya. $500 |
